Stanbic IBTC Holdings PLC, the Standard Bank Group, has taken a brave step in ensuring that Nigeria's Super Eagles win the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) which is taking place in Cameroun.

Stanbic IBTC and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) announced a significant partnership late last year that would see Stanbic IBTC, through its insurance subsidiary, Stanbic IBTC Insurance Limited, provide N1.73 billion in group life insurance and N583 million in total personal accident insurance for each player on the national team for the next three years.

As a result of the MoU signed between the financial institution and the Nigeria Football Federation, Stanbic IBTC has become the official insurance sponsor of the Super Eagles, which came into effect officially this year, 2022. The cooperation is based on youth empowerment, which is one of the institution's cornerstones, and football development, according to Dr Demola Sogunle, Chief Executive, Stanbic IBTC Holdings PLC.

The cooperation, according to NFF President Amaju Pinnick, is extremely beneficial to the players.

The partnership also aims to empower female journalists by providing sponsorship for them to cover Super Eagles matches. As a leading gender-balanced zealot, Stanbic IBTC has sponsored four female sports correspondents to AFCON 2021: Funmilayo Adeyemo, Justina Aniefiok, Janefrances Nweze, and Faith Meregbunam.

The AFCON competition in 2022 will feature 24 teams. The most awaited expectation right now is for Nigeria to win the World Cup. Unlike the past years, where the Super Eagles will face Egypt's Pharaohs in the finals.
